How about building your own Bug Hotel?

Bug hotels can be big or small. You don’t need anything fancy, just a few natural bits and bobs.

1. Build your frame

Use an old wooden box, pallet, or stack planks of wood across bricks. Make sure it’s steady and safe. We don’t want to squash any guests!

2. Choose a cosy spot

Bugs don’t like noisy neighbours! Find somewhere quiet and sheltered.

3. Add the big pieces first

Fill the lower spaces with logs, bricks, rocks, tiles or old plant pots. These make bedrooms and hiding places.

4. Fill the gaps

Tuck in twigs, bark, pine cones and dry leaves. The more nooks and crannies, the better!

5. Add some space for the bees

Tuck in some bamboo canes or hollow stems. Solitary bees often make their homes in little tunnels like these.

6. Add a roof

Every hotel needs a roof! Add a wooden board, slate or tiles on top.

7. Open for business!

Now all that’s left to do is wait and see who checks in!
